Ahhhh!!! I’ve been waiting to post this! Here we go!
Review for Scarlet by Marisa Meyer
Blurb:
The fates of Cinder and Scarlet collide as a Lunar threat spreads across the Earth…
Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She’s trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive.
Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana, who will do anything for the handsome Prince Kai to become her husband, her king, her prisoner.
Explantation:
In April of this year Marissa Meyer visited my school. It was very exciting! I got my copy of Cinder signed and I also finally got a copy of Scarlet and I got that signed too. My classmates and I got to ask questions and hear about plans for the series. (A quartet! Third book Cress is about Rapaunzel!!!!!) But me being me I had lots to read and I didn’t get to read Scarlet until this summer. But it was very good. Here we go.
Review:
All right, so we have a new fairytale, new protagonist, yet, wait, Cinder is here to stay? Yes, as it turns out Cinder is the overall protagonist of the quartet, yet somehow, each book is a new fairytale, “What?”
*Spoilers*
The book has basically two points of views; Cinder’s and Scarlet’s. Generally, Scarlet has the bulk of the book. There is an exception, however, because Prince Kai has a couple of chapters too.
Cinder:
So Cinder starts the book off in prison, until Dr. Erland comes and gives her a more advanced hand and advises her to meet him in Africa so that she can “be princess Selene” and overthrow the Queen. Cinder ends up breaking out of prison with another fugitive named Thorne. While he knows her as the crazy cyborg girl from the ball, he and the rest of the nation (besides the Lunars) are oblivious to the fact that she is princess Selene.
Scarlet:
So Scarlet starts off the book with a missing Grandmother, who she is determined to find. Somehow she manages to have a man named “Wolf” join her on her search, until mysterious circumstances and a betrayal has Scarlet trapped. She already has the knowledge her Grandmother was housing Princess Selene and she is determined to find her.
Wrap Up:
The book wraps up with Cinder and Thorne swooping in to save Scarlet and Wolf in Thorne’s ship, (which is Iko, BTW). They then shoot back up into space where Cinder tells them all that she is Princess Selene, Scarlet and Wolf profess their love for each other, and Cinder makes plans with Wolf to practice her glamour.
Thoughts:
I very much enjoyed this sequel. While it was a continuation of Cinder’s story, it also kept true to the “Little Red Riding Hood” story line as well. I was sad at first that we heard from Cinder so little, but I quickly fell in love with Scarlet’s story line as well and was perfectly happy to enjoy both and watch them meld together.

P.S.
There is one aspect of the story that I didn’t include in my review. Cinder has two chips, Peony’s ID chip and the mysterious Lunar chip that Cinder uses to communicate with a lunar girl. Cinder has to dispose of Peony’s ID chip when she realizes that the government is using it to track her. The Lunar Chip however, connects nicely with Cress which I realized immediately when I read Cress “Chapter One” on this site. Let me tell you, 2014 couldn’t come any faster!!!!!
